Bugs: A Tech-Savvy, Action-Packed ’90s Gem

If you’re a fan of 90s TV or early sci-fi series, you might have come across Bugs, a British show that aired from 1995 to 1999.

Bugs was a clever, action-packed series that focused on a trio of tech-savvy crime fighters: Nick Beckett (played by Jesse Birdsall), Ros Henderson (Jaye Griffiths), and Ed (Craig McLachlan). While it may not be as widely known as other sci-fi series from the era, Bugs carved out a dedicated fan base with its unique blend of technology, action, and intrigue. The show’s reliance on cutting-edge gadgets and its clever storylines made it stand out at a time when the internet was just starting to change the world.

The concept behind Bugs was ahead of its time. As one of the early shows to tackle the idea of independent crime fighters using technology to solve crimes, it showcased how computers and gadgets could be the key to unraveling complex mysteries. In an era where hacking and tech-based crimes were becoming more relevant, Bugs highlighted the growing importance of technological know-how. Whether they were disarming bombs, cracking into high-security systems, or outsmarting criminals using their brains (and not just brawn), Nick, Ros, and Ed captivated audiences with their impressive feats.

Craig McLachlan’s character, Ed, brought an exciting dynamic to the trio. As the group’s action man, he balanced out the tech-heavy aspect of the show with a lot of physicality and charm. Craig, who was already a familiar face from shows like Neighbours, quickly became a fan favourite. His chemistry with the other two leads added warmth to the series, and Ed’s knack for finding himself in dangerous situations gave viewers nail-biting cliffhangers. Together, the team made a formidable group that kept viewers hooked throughout the show’s four seasons.

Though Bugs enjoyed a loyal following, it was constantly on the edge of cancellation. It was saved more than once by its dedicated fan base and the studios’ willingness to give the show another chance. The action-packed episodes, combined with clever plots, made it difficult to let go. Each season seemed to top the last with its intrigue and technological focus, and the show’s fans weren’t ready to say goodbye until it was truly over. Sadly, in the late ’90s, the show did come to an end after four seasons, but it remains a beloved ’90s cult classic for those who remember it.

Today, Bugs can be hard to find, but it’s worth hunting down if you enjoy a good mix of action, adventure, and tech-driven problem-solving. While some aspects of the show may feel a bit dated by today’s standards, its intelligent storytelling, charismatic characters, and forward-thinking use of technology keep it relevant even in today’s tech-filled world. If you haven’t heard of Bugs before, consider it a hidden gem that’s well worth a watch if you ever get the chance.
