Mob Rule or Rule of Law?
A podcast that hit way too close to home
Beautiful people, there’s a thought-provoking lecture that’s just been released on ABC’s Big Ideas podcast – “Why we need to cancel cancel culture” featuring Sue Chrysanthou SC.
The opening blurb asks “Do we want to live by mob rule, or the rule of law?” Sue Chrysanthou responds by describing cancel culture as “fundamentally corrosive” and argues it “ought to have no place in academic or public life.”
The lecture explores how public shaming operates outside our legal system, allegations can replace proof, and mob mentality – amplified by modern technology – can remove people from their position in society without due process.
These themes resonate deeply with my own experience, navigating the repeated and ongoing attempts to cancel me. Watching as allegations made without proof are assumed as truth and any reasonable discussions are replaced by social media pile-ons, co-ordinated for maximum impact.
This podcast is worth a listen for anyone interested in fairness, justice, and how we need to function as a society.
